Teamster Women in History: Clara Day

In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate Teamster women in history.

Pictured is Clara Day from Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Day, a member of Local 743 in Chicago, started her union affiliation by helping to organize fellow workers at Montgomery Ward in 1953. She went on to serve as a business agent and community services director for Local 743.

Day was active in civil rights and women’s rights at the local and national level and helped found the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) in 1974.

CLUW was influential in bringing important issues such as pay equity and sexual harassment to the forefront of labor’s agenda.

Gloria Steinem was once asked how women could get involved in the movement. Steinem thought for a moment and said, “You can call Clara Day.”

Stay tuned to for more strong Teamster women to be honored throughout the month.
