Two weeks after Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle, the camera crews from the media might have left, but the Teamsters haven’t. 

Last week, Teamsters travelled throughout the Florida Panhandle distributing much-needed supplies to victims of Hurricane Michael. This week, the Teamsters have been continuing that mission, while also helping residents get back into their homes and rebuild their lives.

David Renshaw is a business agent with Teamsters Local 769 and the Southern Region IBT Disaster Relief Coordinator. Renshaw lives in South Florida, but has been in the panhandle for more than a week helping residents recover from the storm. After Hurricane Irma hit South Florida last year, Teamsters from around the country assisted Local 769 with disaster relief, and Renshaw was happy to return the favor.

“In my opinion, this shows the true humanitarian component of IBT; the solidarity of helping brothers and sisters in their time of need,” Renshaw said.

Teamsters Local 991 Secretary-Treasurer Jim Gookins was on the ground in the panhandle with Renshaw. On one occasion, Gookins was handing out cash cards to UPS workers who had been affected by the disaster in Panama City, and the workers were so grateful for the help that they signed up as members right there on the spot.
