Teamster Women in History

In honor of Women’s History Month, here is a photograph from 1918. Teamster women truck drivers participated in a national program to bring doctors and medicine to rural areas during the Spanish Flu epidemic. They received commendations for their service. Today, Teamsters work as health care providers, including nurses and Red Cross workers.

Women's History Month: A Look Back in Time

March is Women's History Month. In honor of Teamster women's history, we bring you this photograph from 1955. Pictured here is a Teamster picker at Knaust Mushroom Company. Many of the workers at the company were women, and they wore rigging and headgear lamps to help navigate through darkness. The workers at the Catskill, New York, company were members of Local 294.

Teamster Women in History

The Teamsters Union is honoring Women’s History Month, held every year in March. As we look back on our history this month, here is a photograph from 45 years ago. Pictured are zoo nurse attendants and members of Local 481 in San Diego. The members groom goats at the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park. Daily tasks like this one were just a small but necessary part of the overall goal of the park to facilitate the reproduction of endangered species. This picture was taken in February 1973.

March is National Women's History Month, in which everybody from the Library of Congress to your local bookstore celebrates American women and their contribution to national history. However, the origins of Women's History Month are often misrepresented. President Jimmy Carter is often given a lot of credit for signing Women's History Week, Women's History Month's precursor, into law in 1980, according to TIME. In reality, it's thanks to the tireless work of many named and anonymous female activists that we celebrate women's contributions to history in culture during this month.
