US Ecology Workers in Detroit Choose Teamsters Union
(DETROIT) – US Ecology workers have voted overwhelmingly, by a more than 2-1 margin, in favor of representation by Teamsters Local 283 in Wyandotte, Mich. The 38-worker unit reached out to the Teamsters Union seeking a strong voice to address their workplace concerns.
“My co-workers and I have long needed a voice on the job. I had been a Teamster before, and I knew that we needed a strong union,” said Roger Molner, a 13-year employee at US Ecology. “Because of my experience being a Teamster, I was able to convince my co-workers to organize with Local 283. With the help of the Teamsters, we look forward to winning a strong union contract.”
Molner spent nearly a year working to organize his co-workers and win representation with Local 283. Determined to chart a new course, the newest Michigan Teamsters look forward to negotiating a strong contract that will bring fairness and improve wages and benefits.
“We are pleased to welcome US Ecology workers to the Teamsters and look forward to representing these newest members,” said Greg Nowak, President of Joint Council 43. “I want to congratulate these workers and everyone who helped on the campaign for this great victory.”
The US Ecology workers in Detroit are the second unit this year to join the Teamsters. In April, workers for US Ecology in Georgia voted to join Local 728 in Atlanta.
“We are thrilled to welcome these workers to our union and into the Teamster family. We look forward to helping them secure a strong contract that will improve their working conditions and ensure fairness on the job,” said Steve Hicks, President of Local 283.
