(NEW YORK) – More than 150 workers at facilities under the Bimbo Bakeries USA umbrella in the New York area overwhelmingly ratified a strong new contract with Teamsters Local 553. The drivers and clerical assistants operate out of Bimbo, Stroehmann, and Sara Lee facilities in Bayshore, Long Island; Maspeth, Queens; Stamford, Conn.; and Goshen, N.Y.
“Our members were focused and determined to win the strongest possible agreement,” said Demos P. Demopoulos, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 553. “They made their priorities clear and stuck to their demands, securing a deal that honors their hard work.”
“I am proud of our members for securing a strong Teamsters contract,” said Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference. “The Teamsters represent more than 7,000 workers at Bimbo Bakeries and its subsidiaries and we will continue to fight to get our members the contracts they deserve.”
By a 3-to-1 margin, Local 553 members voted for a three-year contract that includes better pay, increased commissions, and higher merchandising pay. The agreement also includes a raise in pay for working on holidays, a paid birthday, and three additional paid personal days.
“We stood together and won a strong Teamsters contract that’s one of the best we’ve ever had,” said Mark Arnau, a Local 553 steward and 33-year driver. “I’m proud to be a Teamster and to have a strong union that represents and looks out for its members.”
