Teamsters Safety and Health Director Appointed To Labor Advisory Committee
Lamont Byrd, director of the Teamsters Safety and Health department, was recently appointed by US Labor Secretary Tom Perez to the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health.
The Advisory Committee advises, consults with and makes recommendations to the secretaries of labor and health and human services on matters relating to the Occupational Safety and Health Act including regulatory, research, compliance assistance and enforcement issues.
Byrd has been the director of Safety and Health for the Teamsters Union since 1995 after serving as an industrial hygienist in the department. He has a Master of Science degree, is a Board-certified industrial hygienist and currently serves on the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and on the Board of Scientific Advisors with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Byrd is actively involved in developing the IBT’s safety and health related policies and represents the International Union during various safety and health policy related legislative and regulatory activities. He is also responsible for managing a staff of technical professionals who provide technical and regulatory support to rank-and-file Teamster members, trade divisions and conferences, and local unions on issues including but not limited to: transportation safety; occupational safety and health; drug and alcohol testing; and, worker safety and health training.
