Drivers with Ruan Transportation in Florence, South Carolina, have voted overwhelmingly, 18-1, in favor of joining Teamsters Local 509 in Cayce. The 19 drivers who transport automobile batteries united for fair and equal treatment.

“We wanted to see change. They were adding a lot of territory and business, but the compensation didn’t change and we didn’t feel appreciated,” said Teddy Gregg, a driver. “We needed representation so we could stand up together and get some recognition.”

The workers knew that other Ruan Transportation drivers in the country who were already Teamsters were treated better and had better wages and benefits, as a result, said Mike Powers, an organizer with Local 509.

“I’m glad they will have a voice now, and we look forward to negotiating an agreement to improve their working conditions,” said L.D. Fletcher, Local 509 President.
