A Letter from Rank-And-File UAL Mechanic Teamsters

In case you missed it, a new letter was mailed out by a group of rank-and-file Teamster mechanics and related at United Airlines in San Francisco. We think the letter, which is addressed to both AA and US Airways mechanics and related, tells a really powerful story about what UAL mechanics went through and how far they have come as Teamsters.

In their letter, the UAL mechanics express strong support for our drive to change from weak representation to powerful Teamster representation at AA. The letter tells their story of suffering through the poor IAM representation that US Air mechanics know all too well. When they replaced the IAM with AMFA, they quickly discovered that AMFA was even worse. Thousands of jobs were outsourced under AMFA and UAL was poised to sell off the huge maintenance base at SFO.

But UAL mechanics and related “took charge of the situation by starting a grassroots campaign to become Teamsters. Even before we had won Teamster representation, the Teamsters fought like hell to save the huge SFO maintenance base. 3,000 of our brothers and sisters kept their jobs because the Teamsters were able to do what AMFA refused to even try to do!” Click here to watch the video about the UAL mechanics campaign and the hope it inspires for us at AA.

The UAL mechanics have been standing in solidarity with our campaign from the beginning. They’ve talked with us and they know how much we have lost under weak, management-friendly TWU representation, which they talk about in the letter. They are excited about our successful, majority-driven campaign and “look forward to welcoming you as brothers and sisters in the Teamster family and the Airline Division.”
