(WASHINGTON) – The Teamsters Union applauds the introduction of a resolution by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) calling for the start of the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The resolution outlines a number of key provisions that must be included in the text of any renegotiation of NAFTA. These include strong, enforceable labor and environmental standards, protections against currency manipulation, the removal of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement process and strict safety and environmental requirements for any commercial vehicles domiciled in other countries.

“Rep. DeFazio’s NAFTA resolution provides a roadmap for the USTR and the administration to follow if they truly want to fix this broken trade agreement,” said Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa. “Free trade agreements like NAFTA have undermined our manufacturing industry for decades, sending millions of jobs overseas. It is long past time to negotiate fair trade agreements that protect working families and provide good jobs here in America.”
