California Teamsters Hold Virtual #NoOnProp22 Rally

On Saturday, hundreds of California Teamsters attended a virtual rally to mobilize workers against Proposition 22 (Prop 22). The referendum that would legalize the misclassification of drivers as independent contractors in a wide variety of industries throughout the Golden State.

With Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and other tech companies pouring money onto the airwaves encouraging Californians to vote yes, the ballot initiative is already the most expensive referendum in the history of the United States. General President James P. Hoffa kicked off the rally by stressing the severity of the impact that Prop 22 would have on Teamster jobs.

“You know, everybody knows what the gig economy is, it’s basically making people work harder for less money,” Hoffa said. “No overtime, no paid vacation, no health care, no nothing.”

Other speakers included Joint Council 42 President Randy Cammack, Joint Council 7 President Rome Aloise, Recology Driver and Teamsters Local 350 Member Ayanna Banks and MV Transportation Driver and Local 853 Member Monique Prince. You can watch the rally in it’s entirety here:
