(WASHINGTON) — After being forced onto the picket line by MGM Grand Detroit, members of Teamsters Local 1038 have overwhelmingly ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement that secures improved wages, benefits, and working conditions.

The new contract ended a strike that started more than six weeks ago after MGM refused to give the Teamsters and union coalition partners a fair contract.

“Congratulations to the members of Local 1038 for staying strong, fighting back, and ultimately securing an outstanding contract. These workers showed immense determination, strength, and solidarity throughout the entire process,” said Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division.

Despite reporting record-breaking profits, on Oct. 17, workers at MGM Grand Detroit launched the first-ever wall-to-wall strike after the company refused to offer an acceptable contract.

The new collective bargaining agreement will help alleviate the hardships Teamsters at MGM Grand Detroit experienced after sacrificing raises and shouldering heavier workloads during the COVID-19 pandemic.
