It was in this context, one of grave concerns combined with an anti-worker, anti-union offensive that led to the proposal to write this book. Questions like, ‘should the union participate in political/legislative work and, if so, on what basis?’ to ‘is there such a thing as trade union neutrality?’ and ‘can our union or any union stand aside from the political/legislative struggle?’ and ‘should our union concern itself with broad social concerns of society or just take care of the economic issues facing the members?’ These issues must be clearly addressed and answered, especially in light of the right-wing offensive.
