Affiliates from the construction unions including the Steelworkers and Boilermakers met with Teamsters in Washington, D.C. this week to discuss challenges in the cement industry. Part of the event included a presentation by IndustriALL’s North American cement network highlighting the overproduction of cement by China.

Participants also learned how to deal with the multinational corporations that are dominating the U.S. and Canadian cement and ready-mix concrete market.

Bubba Davis, Teamsters Building Material and Construction Trade Division Director, said, “We are ready and willing to stand with our allies in the U.S. and Canada to insure that union workers have more opportunities for employment using locally-made cement.”

According to IndustriALL’s press release, Matthis Hartwich concluded the meeting by saying, “I am very glad that our affiliates from Canada and the USA are working together to raise workers’ voice in the cement multinationals and beyond. It sends a strong signal that companies cannot hide, wherever they go. Together with our affiliates, we challenge any anti-worker policy in the sector.”
