(ST. LOUIS) – On Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, Teamsters Joint Council 13 loaded trucks with hurricane relief supplies for communities hit by Hurricane Florence in North Carolina. The five trucks departed from the USF Holland terminal in Edwardsville, Ill. and headed for a transfer station in Fayetteville, N.C. where the donated food and cleaning supplies will be disbursed to various Teamster locals and other unions to assist communities impacted by the storm.

“We are working closely with our locals in North Carolina as well as the AFL-CIO in the region to coordinate the distribution of relief supplies to families in need of assistance in the aftermath of Florence,” said Roy Gillespie, Teamsters Joint Council 13 Human Rights Coordinator. “Teamsters have always played an important role in disaster relief when it comes to transporting supplies to those in need.”

Gillespie said about 140 pallets of food and cleaning supplies are en route to North Carolina and another truck from Teamsters Joint Council 25 in Chicago will be headed to the Fayetteville with more supplies.

Among the trucks that left the St. Louis area yesterday, one is Kansas City Teamsters Joint Council 59’s truck and another is from Teamsters Local 120 in Minneapolis. Trucks from YRC Freight and USF Holland are also part of the convoy. They are being driven by volunteer Teamster members from various Teamster-represented companies.

The convoy is expected to arrive this evening at the Fayetteville transfer station to begin offloading and distributing supplies (see photos of convoy offloading at N. Carolina transfer station).

“Our union is always ready to help our members and the community,” Gillespie said.
