On August 16, 2018, representatives from the Teamsters Military Assistance Program (TMAP), along with representatives from Joint Council 3, the Teamsters Passenger Transportation Division, FirstGroup (FG) and ABF, participated in the Soldier for Life Open House at the U.S. Army installation in Fort Carson, Colorado.

The Open House provided military spouses and dependents with information on good Teamster jobs with FirstGroup, the largest bus company in North America.

The Teamsters are the first labor organization to formally participate in a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP). The partnership allows TMAP/FG access to military spouses across the country to recruit for Teamster employment opportunities. Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa and First Student President Dennis Maple officially began the partnership with TMAP in 2016, knowing that job opportunities for military spouses at Teamster companies would and could provide military families with supplemental income and a credential that could advance their career pathways.

U.S. Army Soldier for Life Director Col. Samuel Whitehurst  recently shared with Hoffa that his wife Sally Whitehurst earned her CDL in 2001 and worked as a school bus driver in 2001 and again from 2004 through 2007. “She drove a school bus while I was deployed in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Sally was able to take our children to work and earn a paycheck while I was deployed overseas.”

TMAP/FG training and credentialing is provided free of charge to the spouse or dependent at the FG locations.

“It was a pleasure to be with Soldier for Life and our service men and women and their families at Fort Carson. The Teamsters Union and Soldier for Life leadership have a longstanding relationship built off of our shared commitment to support those who have honorably served. We are especially excited about creating opportunities for military spouses and dependents with the TMAP/FG effort,” said Jim Glimco, Teamsters Central Region Passenger Transportation Division Director and Local 777 President, at the Fort Carson Open House.
