UPS Teamsters Support Members, Communities Impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Joint Council 58 Assessing Member Needs, Local 988 Preparing Staging Area

Local 988 part time shop steward Abe Minor is doing what UPS Teamsters do in times of crisis. He is taking action to save lives and help families struggling as south Texas communities are besieged by flooding due to Hurricane Harvey. Brother Minor has spent the last several days with on his boat rescuing people from rooftops in Houston-area communities devastated by the flooding.

On Monday, Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa directed international union staff to provide all necessary support to members impacted by the storm and the resulting floods. With up to 4,000 UPS and UPS members in affected areas, the union is urging all Locals Unions, Joint Councils and individual members to contribute what they can to relief efforts.

Robert Mele, Joint Council 58 President and Local 988 President, has been assessing the best ways that the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund, Joint Councils and Local Unions can provide support to our members and retirees affected by this horrific storm. Local 988 is preparing a staging area for disaster relief supplies at the union hall and will be providing meals to members and retirees in the coming days.

“In this time of great need for UPS Teamsters, other members and whole communities who are fighting to survive this horrific storm, we are inspired by the heroism of UPS members like Abe Minor, and we need all Teamsters to step up to help our brothers and sisters in south Texas,” said Sean O’Brien, Director of the Teamsters Package Division. “The Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund is mobilizing resources to respond to this disaster and preparing to help members get through what will be a very long recovery for the region.”

Joint Councils, Local Unions and individuals can make donations directly to the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund and the funds will be earmarked for assistance to members impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
